Ray Bradbury said, “Anything you dream is fiction, and anything you accomplish is science, the whole history of mankind is nothing but science fiction”.
Here is the fifth Science Fiction Taboo Writers Should Break
Science Fiction Creates Better Worlds
I believe that most, if not all, advances in modern science and technology were, in one way or another, motivated by a Science Fiction idea. TV, computers, smart phones, cures for diseases, the exploration of space – all of these things are the subjects of Science Fiction. Science Fiction charts the course and the real world follows the path. Science is only possible because of the Science Fiction notion that there is a new world coming.
Writing Science Fiction not only entertains us but also it charts the dreams of our future. A Science Fiction writer warns us of obstacles and dangers to come and reveals to us the promises of our imagination. Science Fiction is literature where your vision is temporarily cast into a plot with characters so that someday it may become reality.
Science Fiction’s ultimate goal has been to create a future world where the human condition is vastly improved.
Here’s why I think this Science Fiction Taboo needs to be broken.
Do we really live in a better world? Mankind has believed he could create a better world since Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit. Over the millennia, we have progressed technologically and socially but has it truly been better?
Rather than creating our imagined and dreamed better worlds, why not look at our own history and learn from it. Whenever we took the path down the “Better World” and “New World Order”, “Global Community”, “Utopia”, etc., humanity has suffered. Let’s write about the logical and historical end of all these paths we take to the Utopian society. They all end the same – a tyrannical and dictatorial government and ruler who steals the freedom and wealth of the people. Let’s show people the truth as history has tried to teach us.
Once we’ve shown them the folly of these “better worlds”, lets then try to show them a FREE WORLD. Utopia will never happen by the works of humanity because people are inherently selfish. Utopia is based on the belief that everyone will live for the betterment of everyone else. That we will all place our neighbors before ourselves. This isn’t going to happen under our own power.
I want to show people a free world where we are free to govern and rule over ourselves without the oversight of “Big Brother”. Yes, there will be lawless people, there will be selfish, and nasty people and there will be hateful people. There are now and there have been since the beginning. How has our “better world” removed them? It hasn’t and it cannot and never will.
Let’s show readers the horrid truth of the world and where “better worlds” will ultimately take us. Good guys don’t always win and the bad guys aren’t always the real bad guys. Reality is rarely black and white.
What do you think? Should Science Fiction always change the world for the better? Would you write a story in which the world does not become better?
